Phase of Illness

Stable

Patient’s problems/symptoms are adequately controlled and further interventions are planned. Family/carer situation is relatively stable. No new problems.

Unstable

Patient is experiencing new complex problems or rapid increase in severity of current symptoms. Family/carer’s circumstances change suddenly, impacting patient care.

Deteriorating

Patient’s overall function is declining and, experiencing new problems, symptoms worsening despite regular review. Family/carer experiencing gradual, worsening distress that impacts on patient care.

Dying

Death is likely within days.
